Empaths and Narcissists: A Toxic Attraction Explained

The Dalai Lama believes that empathy is the most valuable quality a human can possess. Given the hardships and pain that characterize our lives, having the ability to sympathize with others' struggles, share their sorrow, and even celebrate their joys is truly a blessing. Empathy makes life meaningful.

In our current world, there is an increasing need for empathetic individuals. Empathy is a skill that can be learned, particularly during early childhood.

However, just like any other ability or characteristic, the levels of empathy vary among individuals. Some people may have just enough empathy to understand and relate to others on a daily basis, while others may have an overwhelming amount of empathy that can sometimes become burdensome. This is often the case for those identified as empaths.

Dr. Judith Orloff, a renowned expert on empathy, suggests that people can fall anywhere on the empathic spectrum. On one end of this spectrum are empaths, and on the opposite end are narcissists, making them polar opposites in terms of empathy levels. Following closely behind empaths on this scale are highly-sensitive individuals.

The more empathetic a person is, the more compassionate they are likely to be and the better their relationships tend to be. Narcissists, in contrast, may lack empathy entirely, which can make them potentially harmful in relationships.

Understanding Empaths

Empaths and highly sensitive people have many similarities and sit near each other on the empathic scale. These individuals have a low tolerance for stimulation and are highly susceptible to their surroundings.

Both empaths and highly-sensitive individuals can become easily overwhelmed in toxic environments. They have the ability to process information and perceive energies around them more deeply than most people. However, they also need more time to recover and relax.

The key difference between an empath and a highly sensitive person is that empaths can sense and absorb energy from other people and their environment. This can be both a gift and a curse. Empaths often have a desire to heal others, which can be beneficial, but if they don't learn to protect and empower themselves, they can end up negatively impacted.

Recognizing Narcissists

Narcissists are identified by their extreme self-love and self-admiration. They fall at the opposite end of the empathic spectrum due to their lack of empathy and compassion.

Narcissists often seek to create chaos to fulfill their need for adoration and attention. They are typically selfish in relationships, seeking to take rather than give. If their needs are not met, they can become angry and may resort to manipulation to control their partner. This makes them potentially damaging partners for empaths and highly-sensitive individuals.

The Unhealthy Bond Between Empaths and Narcissists

Despite their stark differences, empaths and narcissists often attract each other. Andre Solo, an author and expert on highly sensitive people and empaths, states that the contrasting personalities can create a strong attraction.

For empaths and highly sensitive individuals, a narcissist may seem like someone they can truly help. They believe that their understanding and care can help the narcissist evolve into a better person. However, this rarely happens.

Narcissists, on the other hand, are drawn to empaths and highly sensitive individuals because they are easy to manipulate and gain attention from. This can create a toxic cycle that is detrimental to empaths and highly-sensitive individuals.

It is crucial for empaths to understand themselves and protect their energy, especially from narcissists and other harmful individuals. By understanding their emotions and how they work, they can protect themselves from toxic relationships and negative energies.
